For this analysis, we'll be focusing on the Top 20 Manga for June 2024 which tracked sales data from June 2nd, 2024 through July 6th, 2024. (34 total days of sales data) Circana's Top 20 Manga in the US for June 2024

Who is Circana Bookscan?
Circana Bookscan is a platform that collects weekly point-of-sale data on various consumer products print books from over 16,000 locations which include but not limited to: e-tailers, chains, mass merchandisers, independent bookstores, and more.

Methodology
To calculate these numbers, we counted how many titles each publisher has in the top 20 manga graphic novels and gave it a fraction. We then converted each fraction into a decimal by dividing the numerator with it's denominator. Finally, we multiply the decimal by 100 to give us our percentage.
(For example, if Viz Media achieved 16 out of 20 total spots, it's fraction would be 16/20. We then divide 16 by 20 to get a decimal value of .80. Finally, We multiply our decimal value of .80 by 100 to give us our percentage of 80% )

The Breakdown (Publisher Ranking)
Viz Media takes the lead with eighteen titles breaking the top twenty compared to the sixteen titles we saw in May. Shifting over to Dark Horse, Berserk Deluxe Vols. 1 & 2 has maintained their two spots in the top twenty from May to June. This marks the fifth month in a row this year where both volumes have charted. Yen Press and Kodansha lose their spots on the top twenty. Finally, Square Enix is absent from this month's chart.
What's the Total Sales Gross for the Top 20 Manga?

Methodology
To calculate these numbers, we took how many units each title sold within the given timeframe. Then we multiplied the total units by its MSRP given by the publisher. The reason we chose this method is because when conducting research for this project, we've discovered that Circana Bookscan uses this same methodology in their reporting. So to stay consistent with their reporting, we decided it would be best to replicate the same methodology. (For example: Berserk Deluxe Volume 1 made it to the top 20: it sold 11,410 units and it's MSRP is $49.99. We multiply $49.99 by 11,410 units to achieve a total gross of $570,385.90. But to stay consistent with Circana Bookscan, we round up the 90 cents to achieve our new total gross of $570,386.)
However, take these numbers with a grain of salt as not "every" unit was sold at MSRP as different retailers can offer the same books at different price points.
If a box set appears on the chart, each unit sold is counted as a single unit. The number of volumes within a box set is not factored into the number of units a box set sold. This is the same methodology Circana and English retailers use when calculating product sales.
The Breakdown (Units Moved & Total Gross Sales)
Berserk Deluxe Vols. 1 and 2 achieved a combined gross of $1,064,737 (Vol. 1: $791,492 and Vol. 2: $273,245). Compared to last month, there was a 17.61% increase in combined gross sales ( $1,030,443 vs. $876,124).
Looking at both individually compared to the previous month, Vol. 1 saw a 18.36% increase ($791,492 vs. $658,368) and Vol. 2 saw a 25.48% decrease ($273,245 vs. $217,756). Both volumes continued to perform strongly and I expect them to continue to do so moving into next month.
My Hero Academia Vol. 38 is the latest English volume of the series. Historically, each new release reaches the top spots of the top twenty charts. Compared to the release month of the previous volume, it saw an 4.30% decrease in both units moved (Vol. 38: 24,963 units versus Vol. 37: 26,087 units) & gross (Vol. 38: $299,306 versus Vol. 37: $312,783)
While Vol. 38's numbers are lower than to Vol. 37's. Both units moved and grossed less than Vol. 36's release month (December 2023 saw 28,581 Units Moved & $342,686 grossed) My Hero Academia has historically had their latest volumes stick around in the top twenty in between each volume release. So it'll be interesting to see if Vol. 38 can make up it's slow start before the release of the next volume
Similar to My Hero Academia, Kaiju No 8. Volume 10 is the latest English volume of the series. Compared to the release month of the previous volume, it saw an 22.39% increase in both units moved (Vol. 10: 18,989 units versus Vol. 9: 15,389 units) & total gross (Vol. 10: $227,678 versus Vol. 9: $184,514)
Looking at the rest of the series, Kaiju No 8 Vol. 1 found itself in the eighth spot with 7,881 units moved and a gross of $94,493. Compared to the previous month, it saw a 55.53% increase in both units moved (7,881 vs 5,067) and gross ($94,493 vs $60,753). Kaiju No 8.'s Anime ended recently so this increase does not surprise me. My assumption is that we'll see more people purchase the manga in future months to get ahead of the anime.
Chainsaw Man's Volume 15 and 14 made an reappearance in this month's chart. Both achieved a combined gross of $229,476 (Vol. 15: $166,062 and Vol. 14: $63,415). Compared to last month, there was a 57.31% decrease in combined gross sales ($229,477 vs $537,594)
Looking at both volumes Individually. Volume 15 saw a 65.13% decrease in both units moved compared to last month (13,850 vs 39,726) and total gross ($166,062 vs $476,314). Volume 14 saw a small 3.48% increase in both units moved (5,289 vs 5,111) and gross ($63,415 vs $61,280)
One Piece continued to make an appearance this month with it's latest volume releases and omnibus offering. Omnibus 1 saw a 9.06% increase in both units moved (7,439 vs 6,821) and gross ($126,389 vs $115,888) compared to the previous month.
Ace's Story Volume 2 is the latest English volume of the series with it's previous volume releasing in March 2024. Compared to the release month of the previous volume, Vol. 2 saw a 58.25% increase in both units moved (7,859 vs 4,966) and gross ($94,229 vs $59,542)
Finally, Volume 106 made an appearance this month. Keep in mind that this volume released July 2nd and the cut off date for the June's data was July 6th. While the numbers look "low" we'll probably see it in the top spots for July's chart. With that said, it still managed an impressive 10,117 units moved with a total gross of $121,303.
Shifting over to Jujutsu Kaisen, it managed to secure eight of the twenty spots in this month's chart. Volumes 0, 1, 2, 3, 17,18, 21, 22 were able to achieve a combined total of 58,526 units moved and a combined total gross of $701,728!
Looking at the Volumes that made a reappearance this month:
Vol. 1 saw a 34.61% increase in both units moved compared to last month (7,859 vs 5,838) and total gross ($122,370 vs $68,750).
Vol. 2 saw a 41.99% increase in both units moved compared to last month (6,161 vs 4,339 ) and total gross ($73,870 vs $52,024).
Vol. 17 saw a 21.06% decrease in both units moved compared to last month (5,194 vs 4,100) and total gross ($62,276 vs $40,959).
Vol. 21 saw a 6.71% decrease in both units moved compared to last month (5,446 vs 5,838) and total gross ($65,298 vs $69,997).
Vol. 22 saw a 15.40% decrease in both units moved compared to last month (14,342 vs 16,954) and total gross ($171,961 vs $203,278).
For the volumes that didn't make an reappearance:
Vol. 0 moved a total of 6,326 units and achieved a total gross $75,849. The last time this volume appeared in the Top Twenty was in December 2023.
Vol. 18 moved a total of 5,317 units and achieved a total gross $63,751. The last time this volume appeared in the Top Twenty was in February 2024.
Last but not least, Spy x Family and Demon Slayer both earned a single spot in the top twenty for the month of June. Looking at them individually:
Spy x Family Vol. 1 saw a 34.61% increase in both units moved compared to last month (5,793 vs 4632) and total gross ($69,458 vs $55,537).
Demon Slayer Vol.1 saw a 34.61% increase in both units moved compared to last month (7,275 vs 4713) and total gross ($87,227 vs $56,508).
Methodology
To conduct this analysis we chose to focus on the Percent Change between the number of units a volume moved along with it's gross within the Top 20's timeframe. We then compared that number to either it's previous volume or the previous month if a volume reappears in the top twenty again. The reason we chose this method is because we believe this is the best representation to quantify the difference between volume releases.
(For example: If within a given month we notice that the latest volume of My Hero Academia released within the time frame laid out by the Top 20 Manga. We would take it's units sold from & gross and find the percent change to it's previous volume's release month statistics. So if MHA sold 24,963 units and grossed $299,306 within the month. And the previous volume sold 26,087 units and grossed $312,783. The percent different would be a 4.30% decrease between the two months. We would follow the same methodology if we were to discover if the same volume appeared in the previous month and reappeared in the month we're looking at.)
Publisher Analysis & Future Speculation
There's not really much to say as Viz's usual top performers (Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, One Piece) follow the pattern of Newer releases breaking the top while Vol. 1s fall into the middle of the pack or towards the tail end of the top twenty.
What did surprise me is how many spots Jujutsu Kaisen took in the top twenty. I wonder if we'll see Jujutsu Kaisen take more spots in July's top twenty as readers make their way through the volumes in the series.
Berserk continues to perform well as usual and doesn't appear to be slowing down.
I'm curious if Dark Horse's upcoming H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness Deluxe Edition will break into the top 20 next month. I am a bit surprised we did not see Danganronpa 2: Chiaki Nanami's Goodbye Despair Quest Volume 1 break the list considering Danganronpa is one of Dark Horse's top series alongside Berserk and Mob Psycho.
